R. Thomas Mayes, Jr. (Tommy)
Tommy joined SunGate Capital in 2014 and is currently Managing Director and Advisor to the Chair. SunGate is a single-family investment office with interests in real estate, technology, medical imaging, real estate, banking, manufacturing and insurance. He has served on the investment committee since 2015. In conjunction with his role with SunGate, he is the past President and member of the Board of Investors Preferred Life Insurance Company, a specialized private placement life insurance carrier with over $1.4 billion in assets consistently ranked as one of the fastest growing life companies in the country.
As private investors through their family-holding company Prosperity Venture Partners LLC, Tommy, and his wife Katie, own interests in wealth and investment management businesses with assets exceeding $1.5 billion. These include Blueprint Investment Partners, Blueprint Fund Management, and CapInsights Partners LLC (Co-Founder). Tommy is able to leverage his operating and industry experience to provide leadership and counsel to his partners. Katie is also an entrepreneur and owns a fast-growing franchise business in Orlando.
Tommy has broad experience as an investor, an executive, a founder, and an advisor. He has considerable experience advising many successful multigenerational families, and the advisors that serve them, in the areas of investments, governance, risk management, family office structure, and succession. With over 35 years in financial services and banking, Tommy’s career spans multiple senior roles leveraging his passion around culture, leadership, and team building. He has and continues to provide counsel to numerous entrepreneurs and founders on developing robust businesses with firm foundations for growth and success.
Tommy earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the Callaway School of Business and Accountancy at Wake Forest University in 1988. He later earned his Certification in Financial Planning designation from the College for Financial Planning in Denver, Colorado, and attended graduate studies in International Economics and Finance at the London School of Economics. He and his wife Katie live in Altamonte Springs, Florida on Prairie Lake.
